What’s with all the stage collapses?

The AP has reported that another concert stage has collapsed, this time at Pukkelpop in Belgium. Three concertgoers have died and 70 were injured. [Read more] The Smith Westerns had just performed their first song when they were rushed offstage by their manager after the stage started shaking, according to a statement issued by the band:  “Our tour manager yelled at me to run off the stage. Right then the tress collapsed one foot in front of Max. At this point we thought only the stage broke, not the tent. Amid the chaos it was hard to tell exactly what had happened, but after the rescue teams started coming in it became clear that there were severe injuries and we are now being told there are reports of multiple deaths.”

This is one of many stage collapses this summer.  Earlier this week, several deaths and injuries were reported after a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair during a Sugarland concert.  The stage collapsed prior to a Flaming Lips show earlier this month in Oklahoma.  And on July 17, 2011, a storm was to blame for a stage collapsing at the Ottawa bluesfest. ~
