Life-is-Awesome: You’ve been compared to Loretta Lynn and Pasty Cline. How do you feel about that?
CAITLIN: There’s nothing to be gained from comparisons. Some say you do and some say you don’t and all of a sudden you’re in the middle of a dispute regarding your own authenticity based on opinions other than your own. It’s no insult, but it’s also not something people should feed into.
Your mother, Liz Rose, has co-written some of Taylor Swift’s biggest hits. Has your mother given you any advice on songwriting?
CAITLIN: More than advice, I’ve just picked up on some of her songwriting habits and tried to incorporate them into my own. She’s a lot less bashful than I am since it’s always been a business for her. I’m pretty thin-skinned when it comes to unfinished songs and the like and would prefer to be less so.
How long have you been playing guitar and how’d you pick it up?
CAITLIN: I got my first guitar when I was 16. My dad’s been playing for forever and his enthusiasm was contagious. It’s a shame he never taught me how to play.
What can we expect at one of your live shows?
CAITLIN: Bad jokes and good jackets.
What’s your personal favorite song to sing from your album “Own Side Now”?
CAITLIN: That becomes a harder question to answer after touring for 2 or 3 months straight, but I would say Spare Me. I’ve got a habit of changing it in the course of the performance which makes it more fun for me.
What kinds of things do you like to do besides music? What are your other interests?
CAITLIN: Mostly just music, falling in love with new bands and old songs. I like making mixes for people. I like going to movies. I like reading books. There’s a lot of classics I never read so I’m trying to catch up with those and spend less time in bars.
How would you define “success”?
CAITLIN: Being able to buy a house, I guess.
